Primary/K-2 Program Academic elements such as language arts, math, music, science, Spanish, and art are woven throughout all daily activities in this child-centered curriculum. Children might begin the day by doing an animal chore involving feeding and caring for the animal, making observations, and recording the observations in a journal. This simple task builds skills in scientific observations and data recording, builds writing and expressive language skills, and provides an opportunity to nurture and care for community pets as well as fostering responsibility. Students spend time writing in journals; drawing and creating books; working with money and exploring geometry; performing plays that they have written; building worm bins, observing the differences between composting material, recording the data and making evaluations. During the three primary years, rotating annual themes (rainforest, middle ages, and the northwest coast Native Americans) build research skills generally acquired much later in the school career, but also a general knowledge that truly is breathtaking. |
